Gaithersburg is in Montgomery County, Maryland. The former small town and railroad stop has become a connected suburb of Washington, D.C. and a significant city in its own right. The National Institute of Standards and Technology NIST (http://www.nist.gov/) headquarters is in Gaithersburg.
